A Brief History of Reflexology

Reflexology originated in Egypt around 5000 years ago.

The picture above depicts a hand and a foot massage being given, on an Egyptian Wall painting, discovered in 2330BC in the Tomb of the Physicians. Reflexology as we know it has been used in China and India for thousands of years.

In the west, there is evidence of a simple form of Reflexology being used in 1500's in Europe.  In 1913, an American, Dr. William H. Fitzgerald, introduced Reflexology to the West in the form of Zone Therapy. He discovered that by pressing one part of the body can affect another part in the same zone. He used it to help patients with pain relief during operations! Dr. Shelby Riley continued this work and discovered the link to horizontal zones in the hands as well as the feet.

In 1930, a physiotherapist, Eunice Ingham developed Reflexology further, into the form which is used today. She studied ancient foot charts and created the modern anatomically structured foot charts that we use today. A drawing of the human body can be drawn on the soles of the feet showing that the body's organs correspond closely to the reflex points.
