Clinical Aromatherapy and The Elderly
Clinical Aromatherapy is a natural therapy which uses the therapeutic properties of essential oils, applied by massage, inhalation or compress, to help with various medical conditions.
When treating elderly patients, the safest oil to use is Lavender oil as it is non-toxic, non-irritant and non-sensitizing. Scientific research has shown that the main chemical constituents of lavender oil have a sedative effect, but do not impair motor abilities (Colcer-Mihul et al (2007)). Lavender oil has other therapeutic properties including: antiseptic, analgesic, healing, relaxing and balancing properties.
Lavender oil is a good mental tonic, it works on various physical conditions and is a useful treatment for many skin conditions. It can help to balance the nervous system, strengthen the immune system and is an excellent natural analgesic (painkiller).
Calendula Oil is a perfect oil to help dry, fragile skin to heal and balance. Weleda oils such as Lavender and Calendula are 100% plant based oils and have no petro-chemical constituents, no artificial colours or fragrances added to them. They are deeply soothing when used in a gentle massage for elderly clients.
Elderly residents in care homes find that aromatherapy massage treatments are very beneficial, help them to relax and can aid restful sleep. The oil blend is usually massaged onto the arms/hands and legs. The massage is extremely gentle and soothing. Each treatment is tailored to meet the individual clients’ specific needs. The whole treatment is very relaxing and calming.
Dementia sufferers, in particular, are often able to sit calmly and in a relaxed state, during the treatments and for some time afterwards. After a stroke, massage can help relieve tense muscles and bring some pain relief for those confined to bed.
Conditions that lavender oil can help with include:
- Skin problems - from burns, sores and spots, to dry skin, eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis, bruises, bites and stings.
- Lumbago, muscular aches + pains, rheumatism and sprains.
- Asthma, bronchitis, catarrh, sore throats and laryngitis.
- Indigestion, stomach cramps, flatulence and nausea.
- Depression, headaches, hypertension, insomnia, migraine, nervous tension, sciatica, shock and stress related conditions.
