Cathy Fernie BSc (Hons)
I hold a BSc (Hons) Degree in Complementary Therapies Studies from Staffordshire University and have studied Aromatherapy and Reflexology, in depth, over a 5 year period. My qualification includes, not only in-depth study of Clinical Aromatherapy, Therapeutic Massage and Clinical Reflexology, but also, anatomy and physiology, nutrition, pathology and biochemistry, management of pain, leadership and counselling skills, as well as energy, health and well-being. I carried out over 100 hours of case study treatments as part of my Degree and undertook a Clinical Placement in an NHS hospital elderly adults mental health ward, where I later became a volunteer, treating both patients and staff members.
This in depth knowledge enables me to create a personalized treatment plan according to your needs. This may include using a blend of essential oils to help the body to rebalance itself and encourage the body to heal itself or combining different treatments to treat your symptoms. I also hold a Certificate in Cognitive Behavioural Interventions and use this approach with some of my clients, particularly those with stress related conditions.
I have been working as a Clinical Complementary Therapist since 2010 and have treated many clients with very different medical conditions. I have experience with providing treatments for those with depression, anxiety, panic attacks and stress related conditions. I am currently studying for a diploma in Myofascial Tissue Release (MFR) Techniques and am already seeing great success in treating clients with pain in various areas of their bodies using these techniques incorporated into Therapeutic Massage Treatments. For more information about MFR - click here
Both Aromatherapy and Reflexology are very relaxing treatments and it has been clinically proven that relaxation can help provide relief from stress. I also have experience treating clients with many different medical conditions including arthritis, fibromyalgia, motor neurone disease, chronic fatigue syndrome, dementia, post viral fatigue, migraine, back pain, neck pain, oedema, kidney problems, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), hormone imbalances, stress related conditions and many others. Many of my clients have been amazed that their symptoms have improved or reduced by the use of Clinical Reflexology, Clinical Aromatherapy or Therapeutic massage. I offer specialized treatments for women trying to conceive and also during pregnancy, when Reflexology can help with many different issues.
I also hold a VTCT Level 2 qualification in Make Up and Manicure. I currently work closely with many elderly residents in nursing homes in Burton-on-Trent and Derby, providing manicures and Aromatherapy treatments. I have over 14 years experience of working with people with various forms of dementia. I have created a specialist Deluxe Aromanicure treatment that incorporates Aromatherapy Essential Oils and a very gentle massage which is very calming and relaxing for the elderly and those with illnesses such as dementia, Parkinson's disease or following a stroke. The feeling of being pampered and being touched is especially beneficial for elderly clients.

After completing the Foundation degree in Complementary Therapies at partner institution Burton and South Derbyshire College in 2009, Cathy Fernie has now graduated from Staffordshire University with a BSc (Hons) in Complementary Therapies Studies.
When setting up her new business as a complementary therapist in 2010, Cathy used all the skills and knowledge she had acquired whilst studying. She was able to apply all these techniques to make a presentation at a prestigious ‘Dragons’ Den’ competition run by the Burton Mail and fronted by business woman and star of the BBC2 show, Deborah Meaden. Cathy was extremely successful in the competition, winning the Business Accelerator prize.
Cathy says ‘With the support from my tutors I gained the confidence I needed to make the presentation. Winning the competition has launched my business and I’m now asked to do lots of talks at groups and charities.’
Winning the Local Business Accelerator prize has meant that Cathy has seen a rapid growth in her business, increasing the number of appointments she is able to offer to clients at her practice at the Natural Health Care Centre in Burton.
Cathy explained “I’m a ‘live in the moment’ person so I looked at each module individually, and did what I needed to do to achieve a pass for each assessment.” Cathy added to her qualifications in 2011 achieving a Certificate in CPD, Cognitive Behavioural Interventions, and talking about what she had enjoyed studying, said “I really liked the Cognitive Behaviour module as I could apply it to my own life. But, of course, getting my degree has been the best bit!”
